British rower throws mental health challenges into the spotlight after completing solo Atlantic crossing

Tom took the decision to embark on this challenge to help raise money for Mind after he tragically lost his girlfriend, Hatty, in a car crash in 2020. His grief was further exacerbated by the Covid lockdowns and he turned to Mind for support.

Since he pushed off from land at Quidi Vidi in Canada on 5 July 2024, Tom has had to overcome a huge number of obstacles including being capsized three times, sleep exhaustion, sea sickness, and treacherous weather conditions with winds of over 40 knots. Thanks to his satellite equipment on board, Tom has been able to send videos and regular updates of his journey, which were shared across social media.

Having completed the challenge, Tom said: “Having trained for the last three years, I’m elated to have reached the UK and to have raised awareness and funds for Mind who support so many people every day. Hatty was such a special person and I’m so pleased to have done this challenge in her memory.

He continued: “Particularly with the Olympics and Paralympics taking place this summer, and in light of tragic recent events in the cricketing world, the importance of promoting and maintaining positive mental health has never been more important. We need to keep talking about it as it really can save lives.”

Reflecting on his row, Tom said: “I’ll never forget this journey, especially moments such as the incredible number of whales that kept me company and kept my spirits high, when I was completely exhausted. I’d like to thank everyone who has been with me every step of the way, including my family, friends and sponsors.”

Tom’s primary sponsors are Tritax Big Box REIT and Everlast Gyms.

Andrew Dickman of Tritax Symmetry commented: “What Tom has achieved in reaching the UK today is quite simply incredible; the tenacity, determination, courage and honesty he has shown, all to raise awareness for MIND is inspiring and we are proud to have played a small role in helping Tom to complete his challenge.”
